BACKGROUND
Wildlife Strikes Cost Money, Affect Reputations, and Potentially Cause Harm
The consequence of wildlife strikes with aircraft can be very serious. Worldwide, in civil and military aviation, there have been 123 recorded fatal birdstrike incidents, resulting in 442 human fatalities and 470 aircraft losses since aviation commenced, most of those within the last 30 years. Wildlife strikes cost the commercial civil aviation industry an estimated US$1.5 billion per annum and involve more than just the repair of damaged engines and airframes. Even apparently minor strikes which result in no obvious damage can reduce engine performance, cause concern among aircrew and add to airline operating costs.

A committed, long-term wildlife management program can achieve a significant reduction in the wildlife strike rate resulting in:
• reduced costs
• improved safety outcomes
• superior airworthiness
• increased operational capacity
